Solar Panel & Home Energy Costs in the UK

SolarCostsUK provides independent, plain-English pricing guidance for solar panels first — including conventional rooftop solar and the new plug-in solar market — followed by home battery storage and home EV charging.

Our guides are written for UK homeowners, renters and households comparing energy options or deciding whether solar is financially worthwhile. We focus on real costs, realistic savings and long-term value — not sales estimates.

We do not install systems or promote specific companies. This site is designed to help you understand costs before making decisions.

Independent solar pricing guidance for UK households

Learn what solar panels should cost, why quotes vary, and how battery storage, plug-in solar and tariffs influence long-term savings. The aim is clarity — not sales.

Start with the essentials

If you are early in the research stage, these core solar and home energy guides cover the most common questions.

New for August 2026

Plug-In Solar Panels Are Now Legal in Great Britain

Plug-in solar became legal in Great Britain on 27 August 2026, opening solar generation to more renters, flat residents and households that cannot easily install a conventional rooftop system.

Compliant devices can supply up to 800W into the household electrical installation. The Government estimates that plug-in solar could provide up to 20% of an average home's electricity use and potentially save up to £110 a year.

Our updated guide covers current UK prices, the 800W rules, approved systems, DNO registration, safety, balcony use, renters, export payments and how plug-in solar compares with a full rooftop installation.

Solar Carports for UK Homes

A solar carport combines covered parking with solar electricity generation, creating a practical option for homeowners who want to charge an electric vehicle, add renewable energy capacity or make use of driveway space.

Our guide explains typical UK costs, planning considerations, EV charging, battery storage integration and how solar carports compare with rooftop panels.

What Happens to Solar Panels at the End of Their Life?

Solar panels are designed to last for decades and many continue producing electricity beyond their original warranty period. However, older panels may eventually be replaced because of declining output, damage, roof work or improvements in newer solar technology.

Old panels should not simply be treated as general waste. Materials including glass, aluminium, copper and silicon can potentially be recovered, while UK solar PV panels are covered by electronic waste disposal rules.

How our cost guides are calculated

SolarCostsUK is designed to support better decisions — not to generate leads. We use typical UK solar pricing, average household usage and conservative assumptions rather than best-case scenarios.

Our full methodology is explained here: How we calculate UK solar costs .

Looking ahead, we also cover related topics such as smart tariffs, heat pump costs and the longer-term ownership of solar systems, including replacement and recycling of old solar panels, as part of total home energy savings.
